Square Round: the best of two worlds

The hybrid SQR by Companion merges the best of “Square” and “Round” reserves, bringing great benefits to pilots and packers.

The hybrid SQR (Square-Round) has been newly developed from the start, precisely designed to meet the needs of freeflight pilots and reserve parachute packers. The SQR takes the advantages of the newer “Square” reserve parachute form (also known as “cruciform” or “cross” reserves) and merges these with benefits of the classic Pull Down Apex (PDA) “Round” reserves. In doing so, the SQR has created an innovative and forward-looking technology which brings great benefits to both free flight pilots and reserve parachute packers.

Countless computer simulations and practical tests have been an essential part of an extensive development process. The result is a reserve with aerodynamically enhanced pendulum stability, not trimmed to track in flight. The standard example the Companion is one of the lightest reserve parachutes at present.

SQR technology: modern CFD simulation

For the first time in the paraglider market Companion introduces a reserve whose development has been based on authentic computational flow analysis, verified by an extensive progression of practical tests. At the core of the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis is a continuous feedback system, which repeatedly recalculates, many times over, an analysis of the deformation and strain on the reserve in the air, each time taking into account all that has gone before.

This is an important aspect for reserve parachute analysis because these deform a lot due to their pronounced curvature. Our own simulation software and test vehicle makes it possible to make a multiplicity of numerical CFD analyses, as well as deployment tests. At the moment this approach is unique in rescue parachute development.

Hangglider versions of the SQR

• The hang glider version of the SQR has a factory-fitted swivel / rotor in the reserve bridle (connection line). The swivel has been tested and certified up to 5,000 kg breaking load. The swivel effectively prevents a spinning wing from twisting the parachute suspension lines. It is an essential safety factor.
• The swivel is factory-fitted to the hang glider version of the SQR. Retrofitting of a swivel is not permitted. If a reserve does not have a built-in swivel, it is a paraglider version. Conversion for use with a hang glider is not permitted.
• To maximise safety against a carabiner or other equipment failure, we recommend that the reserve should also be connected directly to the hang glider harness by a suitable connector link (minimum breaking load 2,500kg).

We supply this reserve with a factory-fitted hang glider bridle line and swivel/rotor.

Please note that this is a special made-to-order item. The manufacturer will factory-fit the swivel once the confirmed order is received. As it’s made to order, orders cannot be cancelled, and refunds are not available.

Companion is the young, dynamic brand for high quality hang- and paraglider reserve parachute equipment. The brand is a joint venture of the EVOTEC and ADVANCE companies, and unites immense funds of know-how in the simulation, development, testing, production and marketing fields.

Development of innovative reserve-related products is an on-going process, always based on scientific findings and the latest development and testing methods. All Companion reserves are manufactured in EVOTEC’s own production plant in Hungary, and distributed worldwide by ADVANCE.

SQR lifetime extension

You can have the maximum service life of 10 years extended by 2 years through a manufacturer inspection. In order to obtain this extension, the reserve has to be sent to the manufacturer at the end of the 10 years of operational life. The work entails various visual inspections and measurement of fabric porosity and line lengths. Finally, the reserve is stamped with a revalidation certificate, repacked and sent back to the customer. The extension can only be arranged via the companion website.
