Ozone production times

Ozone wings are made to order. Ozone gives their current approximate production time on their website in working days, for example: “The current production time is approximately 25 days from order to shipping”. Add 1-3 weeks for shipping, and allow for unexpected delays. Some may claim shorter delivery times however we’re unsure how they can supply faster than the manufacturer themselves can produce and ship! ;-)

Ozone Delta 5: INTERMEDIATE / ADVANCED – EN C

The Pilot

The Delta is designed for intermediate to advanced level pilots and is the ideal stepping stone into 2 line technology. Suitable for those moving up from a high-B glider and for the more experienced pilots wanting 2-liner control and performance in a lower aspect package for unparalleled ease of use.

The Tech

The Delta is Ozone’s lowest aspect ratio 2-liner wing. Derived from the Photon and developed using all of the knowledge gained from years of competition experience and 2 line technical know how, the Delta is a solid compact platform ideal for XC flying in the most demanding conditions. The 2-line design allows for direct angle of attack control and reduced line drag for exceptional good levels of performance and ease of use never seen before in such a low aspect ratio concept. Compared to its predecessor, inflation, performance, accelerated control and general ease of use has been improved with absolutely no compromise to their True Performance promise.

The new inner structure architecture is optimised for structural integrity and low canopy weight, the wing absorbs turbulence without losing span cohesion so the wing remains compact even in the strongest air which is a very desirable characteristic for responsive handling on the strongest of conditions.

Certification

The Delta 5 is certified EN-C with folding lines.

In flight

The new Delta retains the ease of use and True Performance charactersitics of its predecessor.

The 2 line architecture has allowed for an easier inflation process in all conditions, the wing tips are less likely to raise first. It does not overshoot in strong winds, rises fast and easy in nil-wind, and is generally more forgiving than any of Ozone’s  other 2 line designs.

The Delta offers a precise brake input response with high levels of roll and yaw authority, the direct feel is achieved whilst retaining an overall long brake travel that accepts deep inputs whether instantly changing the roll/yaw response in the thermal or for slowing the wing when performing challenging landing approaches.

Big ears can be performed with either the AR3 or BR3 technique. The AR3 requires a firm pull to initiate – Ozone did not want to compromise the wing tip solidity in normal flying – but once in remains stable throughout the speed range. Big ears with BR3 is less effective but easier to initiate and faster to recover.

The Delta features new risers with adjustable B-handle heights, enhancing ergonomic control to accommodate pilots of all shapes and sizes.

Designer notes

The work on this project took a long time, with 20 different prototypes and a multitude of platforms in terms of number of cells and line architectures.

The Delta is the most important glider in my heart, ever since the Delta 2, which was an achievement for me as a designer, particularly in terms of what it brought to the industry in terms of handling in thermals and solidity and comfort in turbulence.

The Delta is a very versatile model for cross-country flying in all conditions, and I know that each new model is eagerly awaited by the community.

For this glider, the challenge was very high as it was imperative not to lose any of the handling and ease of the Delta 4 while improving inflation, performance, solidity and control at high speed.

I’m particularly pleased with the pleasure the glider gives me in thermals, linked to the great precision at the start of braking but also during re-coring thermals. This was a real challenge for a short two-line structure built from durable and robust materials. I defy anyone to recognise ‘blindly’ that this is a 2-liner, even during inflation.

I’m also very pleased that we’ve managed to finish the project before the heart of the 2025 season, and I’m looking forward to hearing the first feedback from the pilots.

Pilot review

I first started testing 2-liners 16 years ago, those early high aspect ratio prototypes were very demanding to fly and dangerous to test. To now have the same level of performance but with a massive improvement in safety, ease of use and pure flying pleasure is an absolute dream. The Delta 5 really does offer the best of both worlds; the solid compactness of lower aspect ratio design with the direct angle of attack control that only 2-liners give.

Getting here wasn’t easy: over 2 years of development, many prototypes, hundreds of collapses, stalls and spins along with hundreds of flying hours pushing the glider hard in the strong conditions of the southern Alps was necessary to hone the wing to our liking. I am happy to report the Delta legacy continues and our True Performance goals have been met.
